The United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected Distinguished Prof. Shlomo Shamai (Shitz) as a Foreign Associate. Prof. Shamai was elected for his contributions to information theory for wireless communication technology.

With 69 new members and 11 foreign associates, the total U.S. membership of the NAE is now 2,250 and the number of foreign associates is 211.

Shlomo Shamai (Shitz) received the B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Technion, in 1975, 1981 and 1986 respectively. His research areas cover a wide spectrum of topics in information theory and statistical communications.

Shamai is the William Fondiller Professor of Telecommunications in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. He was recently also elected to the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Prof. Shamai is an IEEE Fellow and a member of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI).

He is the recipient of the 2011 Claude E. Shannon Award, the 1999 van der Pol Gold Medal of the Union Radio Scientifique Internationale (URSI), a co-recipient of the 2000 IEEE Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award, the 2003, and the 2004 Joint IT/COM societies paper award, the 2007 Information Theory Society Paper Award, the 2009 European Commission FP7, Network of Excellence in Wireless COMmunications (NEWCOM++) Best Paper Award, and the 2010 Thomson Reuters Award for International Excellence in Scientific Research. He is also the recipient of the 1985 Alon Grant for distinguished young scientists and the 2000 Technion Henry Taub Prize for Excellence in Research.

He has served as Associate Editor for the Shannon Theory of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, and has also served twice on the Board of Governors of the Information Theory Society. He is a member of the Executive Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory.

Distinguished Visiting Professor Sir Richard Friend

Among the other newly elected Foreign Associates of the NAE is Sir Richard Friend, Cavendish Professor of Physics at University of Cambridge, UK;  a  Technion Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering; and 2011 Harvey Prize laureate.
