Energy of the Future


The Nancy and Stephen Grand Technion Energy Program (GTEP) launches its unique International Interdisciplinary Graduate Energy Studies Program.

“This is a truly unique program”, says Prof. Yair Ein Eli,  head of the GTEP Interdisciplinary Graduate Energy Studies Program. “There is none like it anywhere in the world. Students really get the opportunity to make a difference, and to put together powerful research programs.”

Graduate students seeking a place to do meaningful research that could pioneer world science and impact the future of our planet are being attracted to Technion‘s innovative and powerful graduate energy studies program, where candidates have the possibility to play a significant role in the science of sustainability from the outset of their careers. Take for example, Caltech graduate Davyd Wyng. Wyng is researching photovoltaics – in the nano dimension. His research is carried out and reflects his activities in two high-powered Technion research groups: at Materials Engineering in the team of Prof. Avner Rothschild – and at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in the headflnie-making photovoltaic lab of Prof. Nir Tessler.

The potential effects of new energy technologies are revolutionary, but as knowledge accumulates, challenges multiply even faster. Solutions depend upon unprecedented integration of tools and concepts originating from a wide range of science and engineering fields. Technion is already anticipating the need for a broad energy-focussed education in order to nurture tomorrow’s generation of international scientists.The program provides the wide-ranging education necessary to discover the next generation of energy solutions. GTEP provides an environment conducive to interdisciplinary research, the resources necessary to recruit and retain the best minds, which together will generate unparalleled cross-fertilization in a stimulating environment.

GTEP is uniquely suited to carry out this initiative because it has all the individual components required for success: strong engineering and basic science faculties – including aerospace, chemical, biotechnology and food, civil and environmental, architecture and town planning, electrical, materials and mechanical engineering, as well as chemistry, biology and physics. The idea is to enable students to benefit from the developments and advances in other countries.

Tomorrow’s energy researchers and engineers will need to be educated in all classical science and engineering subjects, as well as know-how in economics and policy. Thus, the study program will produce scientists, engineers and researchers with a better understanding of all energy-related issues.
