Yoel Shalit graduates from Institute of Technology – Israel News, Ynetnews

Captive soldier’s brother receives Bachelor of Computer Science two days before 5-year anniversary to Gilad’s abduction.
Yoel Shalit, the brother of captive soldier Gilad Shalit, received his Bachelor of Computer Science (BSc) from Israel’s Institute of Technology on Thursday. During the ceremony Yoel said he was sad his younger brother could not be there and study with him.
Yoel started his studies shortly after Gilad fell captive. The institute’s president, Prof. Peretz Lavie, said that Gilad had helped Yoel move into an apartment in Haifa where he lived for the duration of his studies.
Lavie and other staff members shook the hands of the Shalit family in an unusual step. “It’s a traditional ceremony that has not changed in many years,” Prof. Lavie said, “but this time there is a painful personal tone which merited a violation of protocol.”
Lavie noted that Yoel “never asked for any help during his studies” and added that many students were not aware he was Gilad’s brother until very recently.
He addressed the Shalit family in his speech saying they have become “a symbol for the entire nation” prompting loud applause. Saturday will mark five years since Gilad Shalit had been abducted to the Gaza Strip.

Our collective will to power
Formed through an alliance of Technion’s most dynamic multidisciplinary programs, the PV lab is helping scientists unleash the power of the sun to generate tomorrow’s much-needed energy.


This is not a solar luxury to save cash on fuel bills. Global scientific experts agree that with depleting oil reserves and astronomical increases in world population, the quest for new energy sources is vital to keep our world safe, and that solar power is in first place as the energy supplier of the future.

Photovoltaic cells are used in solar panels across Israel to heat water. However, scientific investigation is still needed to optimize the use of different types of silicon within the cells, for mass production of electricity. Bringing energy know-how and expertise in the nano dimension together, the Grand Technion Energy Program (GTEP) and the Russell Berrie Institute of Nanotechnology (RBNI) are combining strengths in the new photovoltaic initiative. The lab gives Israeli researchers from industry and academia the basic and advanced tools for the fabrication and characterization of photovoltaic devices. 

“Here, there is the freedom to explore what you think is right – in order to gain knowledge,” says lab manager Dr. Guy Ankonia. “Scientists can explore all frontiers of PV… what was not known becomes known. Technion is a great place to do the research. You have the tools, the capabilities to explore, and the freedom.”

      A festive ceremony to dedicate the Ed Satell Family Nitrogen-Hydrogen Alternative Fuels (NHAF) Reaction Research Laboratory, took place at Technion’s Gutwirth Science-Based Industries Park in June 2011.


      An initial founder and supporter of GTEP and the energy research and teaching initiative at the Technion Ed Satell is world renowned as a man of vision and powerful supporter of Israel in anticipating the practical needs of the future

      The Ed Satell Family Nitrogen/Hydrogen Alternative Fuels Reaction Research Laboratory (NHAF) carries out research to find a safe, clean and practical alternative to fossil fuels, based on nitrogen-hydrogen compounds. Comprehensive research is conducted in two main areas: investigation of the combustion process to find the optimal operating conditions and analysis of the combustion emissions; and examination the corrosion of different materials at storage and working conditions to identify materials that are stable at this reaction environment. 

      The NHAF Laboratory strives to  create solutions that will improve the quality of life in Israel and throughout the world.As one of the few non-oil-producing countries in the Middle East, Israel has a fundamental national interest in developing alternative energy resources. As the only democracy in the region, Israel has a unique responsibility to the Western world to help solve the problems caused by over-dependence on despotic and terror-supporting regimes for the fuel that powers the free world. As an enlightened member of the world community, Technion recognizes its profound obligation to preserve the health of the planet through energy research that facilitates responsible use of natural resources

      Alon Dana, a graduate student at Prof. Gideon Grader’s research group on advanced ceramics and non-carbon fuels for energy applications. Dana is currently focussed on reactions of alternative nitrogen-hydrogen derived fuels and analysis of their exhaust gas.

      TECHNION FOCUS MAGAZINE – Technion to lead Israeli Center of Research Excellence in Energy

      The Council of Higher Education announced that the fourth center to be named in the I-CORE (Israeli Centers of Research Excellence) framework is to be headed by Prof. Gideon Grader, director of the Grand Technion Energy Program (GTEP), and it will serve as a Center of Excellence in Alternative Energies. This initiative incorporates 27 researchers at Technion, Weizmann Institute, and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and will act as an Israeli consortium for solar-based fuels. The center, chosen by an international committee, is slated to enlist at least three new researchers in the coming year, returning to Israel from Harvard, University of Michigan, and University of Strasbourg.

      TECHNION FOCUS MAGAZINE – Weizmann Prize to Prof. Yonina Eldar

      Prof. Yonina Eldar of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering is named for the 2011 Weizmann Prize in Exact Sciences. The prize, awarded by the municipality of Tel-Aviv-Yafo in a ceremony to be held in November 2011, is given to Prof. Eldar for her breakthrough work in efficient sampling in information theory.
      Prof. Eldar joined Technion in 2002. She was a Horev Fellow in Technion’s Leaders in Science and Technology program and an Allon Fellow. In 2004, she was awarded the Wolf Foundation Krill Prize for Excellence in Scientific Research, in 2005 the Andre and Bella Meyer Lectureship, in 2007 the Henry Taub Prize for Excellence in Research, in 2008 the Hershel Rich Innovation Award, the Award for Women with Distinguished Contributions, the Muriel & David Jacknow Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Technion Outstanding Lecture Award, and in 2009 the Technion’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2010, she received the prestigious Michael Bruno Memorial Award granted by the Rothschild Foundation.
