When Aharon Zeevi Farkash enters the offices of his company south of Tel Aviv, he needs neither key nor code. As soon as he leaves the elevator, a camera captures his face and body shape, and feeds the information to a computer that recognises his features. The door unlocks.
Should the face recognition software fail, Mr Farkash will be prompted to speak a few words into a receiver. The computer will switch to voice recognition – and unlock the door.
If both technologies fail to make a positive identification, the only way to enter is with the permission of the receptionist sitting on the other side of the door.
“There is not one technology that will give you 100 per cent accuracy. Not face recognition, not voice recognition, and not a doorman either,” says Mr Farkash. The picture changes, however, once the technologies are bolted together, allowing one piece of the system to step in on the occasion that the other fails. “The technology transforms you into the key,” says Mr Farkash, the founder and chief executive of FST21, the company that developed the system.
The company, set up in 2007 and scheduled to break even at the end of 2012, encapsulates many of the trends and forces that have turned Israel into a global technology powerhouse. Its main product is a mix of technologies, combining hardware and software to suit a specific need. Such technological mash-ups have long been regarded as a speciality of Israeli’s high-tech entrepreneurs. Then there is the focus on security, another Israeli strength. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the company bears the unmistakable stamp of Israel’s most successful and secretive technology incubator: the Israel Defence Forces’ Unit 8200.

It would be very nice, but how much would we be willing to pay for such a toothbrush?
“The secret is to bring such a technology to market, but to lower the price so that everyone could afford it,” says Procter & Gamble Israel Innovation Center director Lital Asher.
Asher will attempt to interest the Israeli life sciences industry in consumer products in a lecture that is part of the “Healthcare Technological Innovation” course, which will take place December 12-14 at the Tel Aviv University Faculty of Management, sponsored by the Israel Life Science Industry Organization, and organized by DFJ Tamir Fishman Ventures managing general partner Dr. Benny Zeevi.

Tiny bits of proteins necessary for cells to divide have been found by Israeli and German scientists to have an astonishing ability to go into reverse as if they were car-like “nanoengines.”
According to a 13-page article just published in the online edition of the EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization Journal) and due to be published in the December 14 print edition, the discovery could be vital for the understanding of biological motors during cell division, not only for basic cell science but also for cancer research and biologically inspired nanotechnology in medicine and industry.
The new discoveries indicate the nanometersized molecular machines are much more powerful and versatile than previously thought.
Scientists at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba who have been working with a group from George August University of Goettingen, Germany, made the discovery while working on motor proteins essential for cell division.
They found these “nanoengines” can drastically modify their speed and even switch direction when loaded with a cargo – something that was not realized until now.
Cell division is a key process in the development of organisms. During regular cell division, duplicated chromosomes of the mother cell are distributed into two daughter cells. This tightly regulated process is driven by specialized enzymes called motor proteins; prominent among them are the families of kinesins and dyneins. Until now, it was believed that each member of those families was structurally programmed for a defined directionality on its track, the microtubules of the cytoskeleton. One class of motors was believed to generate motion toward the cell poles and another toward the cell equator.

The whole of the Technion celebrated last weekend with Nobel laureate, Distinguished Prof. Danny Shechtman, who leaves next week for Stockholm for the award ceremony. “Our delight is not just because one of our own won the world’s most esteemed prize but, rather, because scientific truth won, said Technion President, Prof. Peretz Lavie.
The Swedish ambassador to Israel, Elinor Hammarskjöld, in her talk also spoke of Prof. Shechtman’s firm stand for many years against the opinion of the entire scientific world regarding his discovery. “We admire not only the discovery of quasicrystals, but also your scientific way,” she told the Nobel laureate.
Haifa Mayor, Yona Yahav (Attorney), made Prof. Shechtman an honorary citizen of Haifa. “The good news is that the decision was a unanimous one by the City Council. The not-so-good news is that the decision does not exempt you from having to pay city taxes,” said the Mayor to the laughing listeners.
The Nobel winner for Chemistry in 2004, Distinguished Prof. Aaron Ciechanover of the Technion’s Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, said to Prof. Danny Shechtman: “Welcome to the club. Today you are joining an exceptional group.” Regarding the winning of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry thus far by four Israeli scientists (Professors Avram Hershko, Ada Yonat, Danny Shechtman and himself), Prof. Ciechanover said, “Chemistry today is a much broader concept than the narrow one that up to now has been generally recognized.”
Prof. Shechtman thanked the large audience: “I usually do not get emotional,” he said. “This evening I am overwhelmed. I feel a lot of warmth here. I feel good standing next to the lectern. Here is where I began teaching the course I founded 25 years ago in order to encourage technological entrepreneurship in the state of Israel. I am a Zionist and I want this country to be a good place to live. From here I call for good education for everyone because without good education there will be no revitalization.”
He revealed that he and Mayor Yona Yahav have decided to promote an initiative for scientific education for preschool children in Haifa. “I will do all I can to promote education in the state of Israel,” he promised.
The ceremony moderator was the Dean of the Faculty of Materials Engineering at the Technion, Prof. Wayne Kaplan.
