Mazor Robotics Ltd (tase:MZOR), the leader in innovative surgical robots and
complementary products for spine surgery, announced a purchase agreement with NSH
Michigan, Inc. The Renaissance(TM) system will be installed at NSH Michigan, Inc.’s
affiliate, the Lakes Surgery Center, in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The Renaissance
system was recently launched as the new generation of Mazor Robotics Guidance
Systems.

With the Renaissance system already in use at leading U.S. hospitals specializing in spine
surgery, this is the first Renaissance system installed in an ambulatory surgery center.
According to National Health Statistic Reports, more than 300,000 people in the U.S.
seek surgery annually for relief from chronic back pain resulting from spinal disc
diseases, including herniations and protrusions. Common spine procedures such as
endoscopic discectomy are typically performed in spine surgery centers while other
procedures such as spinal fusion are usually performed in hospitals. With new technology
like the Renaissance system, more cases can be performed on an out-patient basis with
minimal recovery time. There are approximately 3,300 ambulatory surgery centers in the
U.S.

Letter from Technion President Peretz Lavie on NYC

December 28th, 2011

To the entire Technion family,

The selection of the joint proposal submitted by Technion and Cornell to establish a Campus for Applied Sciences and Engineering in New York City was announced by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in a dramatic press conference on December 19th. The new campus, to be built on Roosevelt Island, will transform New York into a center for technological innovation.

In early January 2011, when a city representative conveyed Mayor Bloomberg’s invitation to  Technion to submit a proposal for the new campus, my first question to him was, “Why Technion?” He replied: “Mayor Bloomberg believes no other university has had such a significant impact on an entire country’s economy as Technion.”

The invitation to submit a proposal for such an illustrious undertaking reflects the international community’s perception of Technion’s prestige, excellent teaching standards, and quality research. Technion’s administration decided to accept the invitation and submitted a proposal together with Cornell University. Drafting the proposal was a learning process during which we confronted a number of potential issues at stake for Technion.

From the numerous proposals that were submitted by US-based universities, as well as by prominent universities in Canada, India, Korea and other countries, only five advanced to the final stage. The finalists included Stanford, Columbia, Carnegie Mellon, and the Technion-Cornell partnership. Technion’s successful partnership with Cornell is the result of lengthy, even grueling, negotiations, and is based on the prestige of both institutions and on Technion’s extensive experience in applied research and its immense contribution to Israel as a “start-up nation.” Throughout the negotiations, Technion remained firm on the issue of finance: Technion will commit our reputation, proven experience, and exceptional researchers, but we are not prepared to invest funds in this historic undertaking.

We repeatedly asked ourselves whether our participation would encourage “brain drain” from Israel. Extensive examination of this issue led us to the conclusion that the contrary was true: the prestigious Technion-Cornell New York City campus will serve as a bridge and encourage scientists to return to Israel. While many bright and promising Israeli scientists seek to return to Israel from their studies and training in the United States, and particularly in New York, the lack of positions available at Technion and other Israeli universities has left them to seek their futures elsewhere.

Inviting such researchers to the New York campus will be the first step in their return to Israel. Furthermore, Technion’s experience in establishing a center abroad has proved successful in Singapore. For several years now, Technion faculty have visited the center for varying periods, and this wonderful partnership has improved our ties with other universities in rapidly developing Asia.

The selection of the Technion-Cornell consortium’s proposal for the distinguished New York City campus puts Technion at the forefront of scientific, technological, and applied research globally, bringing us one step closer to realizing Technion’s vision of joining the world’s top ten research institutes.

I wish to thank everyone who labored over this complicated proposal, working tirelessly day and night throughout long negotiations with Cornell University. I would especially like to thank the senior administration team: Prof. Paul Feigin, Prof. Oded Shmueli, and Dr. Avital Stein; Deans Prof. Adam Shwartz of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Prof. Eli Biham of the Faculty of Computer Science, Prof. Pinhas Bar-Yoseph of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Prof. Arnon Bentur of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Prof. Boaz Golany of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management, Prof. Jacob Rubinstein of the Faculty of Mathematics; and Prof. Haim Gotsman from the Faculty of Computer Science, who coordinated the draft proposal.

On December 10, 2011, Distinguished Prof. Dan Shechtman of the Faculty of Materials Engineering stood on the famous “N” in Stockholm’s splendid concert hall to receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry from King Carl XVI Gustaf. Distinguished Prof. Shechtman joined his colleagues Distinguished Professors Avram Hershko and Aaron Ciechanover, from the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine (2004 Noble Prize Laureates in Chemistry) in receiving the world’s most esteemed scientific accolade. Few universities have had three of their faculty members awarded such honor in just 7 years; even fewer scientific-technical institutions have had the privilege of three Nobel Prize Laureates.

Our proposal’s selection for the New York City campus is further recognition of Technion’s excellence, which is grounded in our academic, administrative, and technical faculty and staff; for this I extend my thanks.

Silicon Island: a NYC hub for technology transfer

“We are glad to have the opportunity to join forces with Cornell University, to tap into the already rich innovative New York based eco-system and share our tech-transfer practices, insights and methodologies”

One of the most significant global academic milestones of this century must be the decision announced on December 19th 2011 by New York Mayor Bloomberg of Cornell University and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology as winners in a $2 billion competition to build a science and engineering campus on Roosevelt Island. The planned campus aims to serve 2,500 students and 280 faculty by 2043. It also intends to boost the number of graduate engineering students in the area by 70 percent. For the first time in history, the new academic venture will be called an institute of “Innovation”.

For Technion scientists patenting new technologies and looking at commercialization, TCII represents a foothold in New York City which is vital for global commercialization and networking. US investors will also have a domestic gateway to emerging technologies from Israel’s top powerhouse of innovation.

Included in plans for TCII (the Technion Cornell Institute of Innovation), is a $150 million fund to spawn New York area startups. The move comes on the heels of plans from IBM, Intel and others to participate in a $4.4 billion New York state effort to develop semiconductor technology for 450mm wafers.

“The message we are sending with this announcement is: look out Silicon Valley, look out Boston, New York will be second to none,” stated U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer.

The campus will be organized around three interdisciplinary hubs: Connective Media, Healthier Life, and the Built Environment. Cornell will immediately offer Master and Doctoral degrees in areas such as Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Information Science and Engineering. In addition, after receiving the required accreditation, the campus will also offer innovative Technion-Cornell dual Master of Applied Sciences degrees. The concept of organizing TCII into multidiciplinary ‘hubs’ was introduced by the Technion, based on its successful multidisciplinary research centers, such as the Grand Technion Energy Program, says Technion President Peretz Lavie.

The TCII Campus will host entrepreneurs-in-residence, organize business competitions, provide legal support for startups, reach out to existing companies to form research partnerships and sponsor research, and establish a pre-seed financing program to support promising research. In addition, the campus will structure its tech transfer office, which will be on-site, to facilitate startup formation and technology licensing. The TCII Campus will also establish a $150 million revolving financing fund that will be solely devoted to start-up businesses in new York City.

“Starting today, we are going to put our plan to work, tapping into our extensive connections throughout the city and build a truly 21st Century campus to fuel the creation of new businesses and new industries throughout the city for decades to come.

Israel today has one of the highest concentrations of high-tech start-up companies globally. In partnership with a strong community of incubators, private investors, venture capitalists, angel groups and entrepreneurs, the Technion’s tech transfer arm, Technion Technology Transfer ( T3 ), has filed an average of 300 new patents each year and annually nurtures innovative startups in sectors such as clean-tech, cell therapy, drug delivery, nanotechnology and others. Technion graduates currently head nearly half of the 121 Israeli companies on the NASDAQ, which have a combined market value of over $28 billion. More than 70 percent of the Technion graduates are employed in the high technology sectors that drive Israel’s economic growth.  Presently, Israeli companies headed by the Technion graduates employ 85 percent of Israel’s technical workforce.  According to a recent article in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, there are approximately 4,000 start-up companies located around the Technion’s home campus.

With the selection of Cornell/Technion now complete, the project is scheduled to move into the environmental and land use review process, expected to be completed by the fall of 2013. Groundbreaking on the first phase of the Roosevelt Island campus is expected by the beginning of 2015. A temporary off-site campus will be open in 2012.

The Technion awards the Yanai Prize for the first time to 14 lecturers who see teaching as a ‘calling’.

On Wednesday, the Yanai Awards for Excellence in Teaching will be awarded for the first time to 14 lecturers. Each lecturer will receive 100,000 shekels, as a personal award. Technion President, Prof. Peretz Lavie, said that the prize is being awarded as part of his drive to improve the learning environment at the Technion.


 “The idea of establishing the Yanai Prize emerged from my first meeting with Moshe Yanai, a graduate of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, a Distinguished Fellow of the Faculty, and a pioneer in the field of computerized data storage,” relates Prof. Lavie. “Moshe told me about his learning experience in the Technion. He said that the Technion equipped him with important and effective tools that contributed to his professional success, that the level of studies was very high, but that he does not recall his time at the Technion as enjoyable. I told him that the Technion has two completely different sides. On the one hand – it is an outstanding institution that is counted among the leaders in its field around the world and on other, it has a less positive side: it is perceived by students as a demanding institution that is not student-friendly. I told him that when I was installed as President of the Technion, I would do everything I could to improve the learning atmosphere. Thus, the Yanai Prize was born.”


The 14 prize winners were chosen by a committee headed by Technion Vice President for Academic Affairs, Prof. Moshe Sidi. The committee comprised students, faculty members and education specialists. Together, they evaluated teaching achievements and attituds of each and every candidate according to student statements, letters of recommendation sent by colleagues and position papers by the candidates in which they expressed their educational methods.

The 14 prize winners were chosen by a committee headed by Technion Vice President for Academic Affairs, Prof. Moshe Sidi. The committee comprised students, faculty members and education specialists. Together, they evaluated teaching achievements and attituds of each and every candidate according to student statements, letters of recommendation sent by colleagues and position papers by the candidates in which they expressed their educational methods.


“The Yanai Awards will enable us to place the winners at the forefront so that they can serve as role models,” stresses Prof. Lavie. “I have no doubt that this prize will contribute to the learning atmosphere at the Technion.”

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Cornell University President David J. Skorton, and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology President Peretz Lavie on Monday, December 19, announced an historic partnership to build a two-million-square-foot applied science and engineering campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City. “Thanks to this outstanding partnership and groundbreaking proposal from Cornell and the Technion, New York City’s goal of becoming the global leader in technological innovation is now within sight,” said Mayor Bloomberg.

The campus will be organized around three interdisciplinary hubs: Connective Media, Healthier Life, and the Built Environment. Cornell will immediately offer Master and Doctoral degrees in areas such as Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Information Science and Engineering. In addition, after receiving the required accreditation, the campus will also offer innovative Technion-Cornell dual Master of Applied Sciences degrees.



The NYCTech Campus will host entrepreneurs-in-residence, organize business competitions, provide legal support for startups, reach out to existing companies to form research partnerships and sponsor research, and establish a pre-seed financing program to support promising research. The NYCTech Campus will also establish a $150 million revolving financing fund that will be solely devoted to start-up businesses in the City.

Cornell is widely known as a global leader in the fields of applied science, engineering, technology and research, as well as commercialization and entrepreneurship. Cornell is home to the top-rated Ivy League engineering program and is one of only a handful of institutions with top-10 programs in the key disciplines that drive today’s tech sector: Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Nanotechnology, and Information Science.

Like Cornell, the Technion also has a world-class track-record in research, development and entrepreneurship. The Technion’s departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science are considered to be among the best in the world. The Technion boasts top ranking faculty members including Nobel laureates -the most recent, Professor Dan Shechtman – who just last week accepted the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Professor Shechtman is also well-known for his course on entrepreneurship, now in its 26th year and boasting 10,000 graduates. The Technion has long been considered a driving force behind Israel’s emergence as one of the world’s great centers of technology.

Israel today has one of the highest concentrations of high-tech start-up companies globally. In partnership with a strong community of incubators, private investors, venture capitalists, angel groups and entrepreneurs, the Technion’s tech transfer arm, Technion Technology Transfer (T3), has filed an average of 300 new patents each year and annually nurtures innovative startups in sectors such as clean-tech, cell therapy, drug delivery, nanotechnology and others

Companies including Intel, Google, Microsoft, IBM, Qualcomm, Yahoo! and Hewlett-Packard have established major operations near or on the Technion campus, where they can take advantage of  the world-class research and students and faculty members of the Technion. Apple computers is the most recent addition to this global consortium of smart talent hunters in Haifa.

Technion graduates currently head nearly half of the 121 Israeli companies on the NASDAQ, which have a combined market value of over $28 billion. More than 70 percent of the Technion graduates are employed in the high technology sectors that drive Israel’s economic growth.  Presently, Israeli companies headed by Technion graduates employ 85 percent of Israel’s technical workforce.  According to a recent article in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, there are approximately 4,000 start-up companies located around the Technion’s home campus.

With the selection of Cornell/Technion now complete, the project is scheduled to move into the environmental and land use review process, expected to be completed by the fall of 2013. Groundbreaking on the first phase of the Roosevelt Island campus is expected by the beginning of 2015. A temporary off-site campus will be open in 2012.
